Bringing the Future Into the Present

Mack_070409 (Posted by HMasters)

What does it take to bring the future you see into the present? Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale believes it takes tenacity, mental toughness, hope, and most importantly faith.  That was the message of his remarks at the Grand Re-Opening celebration at Gallery Furniture's main store at 6006 North Freeway.

Forty four days before,  the store was damaged by a fire that destroyed the warehouse behind it.  The day, Mack says he knew "our future would be brighter and better, but we would have to work hard to bring that future into the present."

And then things began to happen.  A new warehouse was found by four p.m. on the Friday after the fire.  Furniture was shipped to the warehouse and soon on its way to customers.

Then he knew that ""Gallery Furniture would rise again as a symbol of free enterprise, capitalism, and the power of the entrepreneurial spirit to prevail in th face of overwhelming adversity."

"We saw that with determination and hard work, we could in fact bring that brighter future into the present."

In just forty four days the store was cleaned up, repaired, remodeled, and restocked.   And at 10 AM on the Fourth of July, the store opened for business again.

The ribbon-cutting to open the store came as the climax of a dedication ceremony featuring a color guard from the U.S. Army, rousing renditions of the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America from Gallery's own Singing Salesman, Darrell Luckett, and Mattress Mack's account of the night of the fire.  (See the full text of Mack's speech.)

A big thanks to Larry and Mary H. of Dickinson for their family's support of Gallery Furniture and for their kind words and well wishes as we move forward and prepare for the Gallery Furniture grand opening party at 6006 I-45 North between Tidwell and Parker on 07.04.09!

Mark This Date: 7-4-2009

Plans are moving for the grand re-opening of the 6006 I-45 North Gallery Furniture.  The showroom will open on July 4, 2009.  It will be a partial re-opening because repairs won't be complete on the rest of the building, but Gallery Furniture will again be delighting customers where it all began.

Every day brings meetings with architects, designers, and contractors who are cleaning up the front part of the store and getting it ready to re-open.  It won't be the same Gallery Furniture.  It will be an improved version of the world's greatest furniture store.

More on that later.

---

Sheia Jackson Lee A big thank you to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee who stopped by the Post Oak store Monday morning.  She came in to express her sympathies after the May 21 fire and offer her support and assistance in getting things back to normal.

She read some of the many letters and cards that have come from customers since the fire.  She left with one of the Gallery Furniture basketballs customers get, calling it a good luck charm.

Again, thank you Congresswoman.

Main Store Re-Opening July 4

Mack_news There was a big turnout at the 6006 North Freeway store this morning (Thursday, June 4) for a news conference to announce that Gallery Furniture's main store will re-open July 4.  It will be a partial re-opening, as the damage from the May 21 warehouse fire is repaired.

Every one at Gallery Furniture is excited about the future and moving forward with construction and clean up.  Out of an evil act -- the arson fire at the warehouse -- much good will come as the world's greatest furniture store is remodelled and re-invented.

A team of experts is helping us with this project, including customer experience expert Jim Gilmore, author of The Experience Economy, one of the top business books of the last decade.   Along with Gilmore, world famous designer Bill Stubbs will be working  on the renovated interior of the store.  Stubbs talked about one of the innovations coming to Gallery, a place for customers to choose a frame and fabric for a new sofa and then watch as it is built in the store, ready for delivery in about two hours.

The fire has not stopped Gallery from selling furniture and it is not stopping the store's efforts to give back to the community either.  Two new initiatives were announced at the news conference.  First, the USO centers at the Dover Air Force base in Delaware will be remodelled in the coming week as part of the Gallery commitment to the USO.  Second, in recognition of the debt of gratitude owed to the Houston Fire Department, Gallery Furniture will take part in the Adopt A Fire Station program by giving a $10,000 gift certificate to each of the 31 fire stations that were involved in fighting the fire May 21.

Check Another highlight of the news conference was the presentation of a three million dollar check from Liberty Mutual Insurance, the first of what will be a number of insurance checks to come.  A big thanks to Liberty Mutual, Safeco, an W. M. Jones for their work in the wake of the fire.

This revitalization of the world's greatest furniture store is going to be a triumph of the human spirit and a triumph, at the end of the day, of good over evil. We hope that out of this evil act that was performed out here, much good will come.

If you would like to make a suggestion for how the original Gallery Furniture store can be made better, please let us know.  See our Suggestion Box at www.GalleryFurniture.com.

Lending a Helping Hand

A very nice phone call came in Wednesday morning, from a woman named Candice.  She wanted to make sure I knew that two Gallery Furniture employees had been very nice to her Tuesday night.

Candice said she was on her way home from work on the North Freeway when she had a flat tire.  She pulled into a gas station near 1960 to change the tire.  There were a number of men at the station and she asked for some assistance, but no one would help her.

She knows how to change a tire, but Candice says being six months pregnant, she would rather have someone else do the heavy lifting.

With no help being offered, she started to get the spare out of the trunk when a Gallery Furniture delivery truck pulled off the service road and two men got out.  They asked her what they could do to help.

The Gallery crew did more than help, Candice says.  They changed her tire for her, figured out a problem with the jack along the way, and put the bad tire and jack in her trunk.

"These two are the kind of people you want working for you," Candice said this morning.  "They are a credit to you guys and the people you hire."

She identified the pair as B.J. and Germaine.  They are indeed the kind of people who work for Gallery Furniture.  Thank you, Candice, for recognizing them and telling your story.

At Gallery Furniture it's all about the customer, even when the customer isn't a customer  yet.

From Tragedy to Triumph

There is a banner up at 6006 I-45 North Between Tidwell & Parker that says, simply, that Gallery Furniture will rebuild.  While the banner has been up, folks in the local community, Gallery Furniture employees, and others, have contributed to the banner with messages of love, well being, and kindness.  Any of the pictures, posted below, can be clicked on to show a larger image (will open in a separate window).

Gallery Furniture's Prize Steer Post Oak Relaxing in Liberty, TX

Gallery Furniture's prized champion Post Oak is doing well in Liberty, TX amidst a gorgeous 20-Acre lot and has moved in with over twenty heads of fellow bovine friends and even has a personal fly catcher!  For those who were interested in how Post Oak was doing, Post Oak made it out fine (as did all the other beautiful animals, parrots included!) and seems quite happy and content to be alive and well in beautiful Liberty, TX relaxing in the sun and enjoying the country life after a stint as an urban bovine.

PostOak Laura, Gallery Furniture's Service Manager (who also helps with the livestock) said that Post Oak "was definitely living it up in the country" and was "definitely enjoying the outdoors and having a fly-catcher nearby and enjoying hanging out with other cows" - Post Oak then agreed to strike a pose in the field for Gallery Furniture, as shown in our photo here!

So just where is Post Oak?  Gallery Furniture's Service Manager Laura shed some light on that:  "We [Gallery Furniture] appealed to my friend Kathleen for a sanctuary for the Grand Champion.  Kathleen Burnam, and her husband J.C., have graciously allowed Post Oak to reside at their property during is time of displacement. Kathleen says "we enjoy having him and he is happy with herd."

Gallery Furniture is happy that all animals are safe, accounted for, and have new homes! (Please for click picture to left to enlarge).  Indeed, this is one Grand Champion living the grand life out in beautiful Liberty, TX.

Solid Wood Survives

That old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words is true.  There are two pictures you have to see from the ruins of the warehouse destroyed by fire May 21.

Here they are.

Mango_table

The first picture is a mango wood table that was in the warehouse at the time of the fire.  The blaze was hot enough to melt metal, but somehow this table survived.  It has a broken leg, its top has been scorched, but it's still there.  Even the price tag made it through the fire.

Mango_end

Picture number two is of a mango wood end table.  It is damaged, but still here.  The boards on the top are burned and there is some scorching on all sides, but the table survives.

Like these two pieces of solid wood furniture, Gallery Furniture has come through the fire a little damaged, but determined to continue, to serve the best customers on earth.  A little sanding will remove the scorch and reveal the solid wood beneath it.

Gallery Furniture's 6006 North Freeway store will re-open.  The fire is a great tragedy, a blow, but the store will recover and be better than ever.  If fact, this is an opportunity to re-invent what was already the world's greatest furniture store.

Many customers have told us they consider the store their own.  "It's my store" is the way they put it.  So Gallery Furniture has a way for you to take part in the re-invention of the 6006 North Freeway store.  Make a suggestion.  It could be something you would add to the store, something you would change, or a completely different way to do things.  Just use the message board "Suggestion Box" to share your idea.

The tables in the pictures will not be repaired and sold.  Instead, they will be preserved as a reminder of what an arsonist's fire could not destroy; the tough, resilient heart of Gallery Furniture.

The Animals of Gallery Furniture

When the Gallery Furniture warehouse burned, many people were concerned about the four macaws who live in the store.

They were all rescued, though one of them had to be revived by firefighters.  (Thanks, HFD!)

Birds1 Now, a week later, it seems like a good time for an update on the birds and the other animals who were fixtures at Gallery Furniture's main store at 6006 North Freeway.

The birds are doing well and seem to have settled into their temporary quarters at the Post Oak store.  You can see them when you come in the door.

Another animal resident of the store is Post Oak, the champion steer from the Houston Livestock Show.  He had his own quarters at the front of the property and was never threatened by the fire.  But with no power and water service, he had to be moved.  So Post Oak has been moved to a local ranch where he has company.  He's reported to be in fine shape.

There were also three miniature horses, the Three Amigos, at the store when the fire started.  They've been moved to the ranch too and all are said to be doing well.

A Special Performance

All of us at Gallery Furniture are honored and humbled by the many expressions of love and support from the people of Houston that have been coming in since the night of the warehouse fire.

In letters, emails, cards, web postings, and personal visits, so many people have taken time to express their feelings about Gallery Furniture and the staff.

By reaching out to us, you are helping more than you can know.

Friday morning, another message of support came into the Post Oak store in the persons of Leslie Soria and Sh'riff Hasan from the KIPP Houston High School, the dance instructor and Theatre Arts director.

KIPP They wanted to tell us that their students in the theatrical ensemble had staged a show to benefit Gallery Furniture and bring by letters of support and donations they gathered at the show.  As we've said, money is not needed so the proceeds from the kids' raised will be given to the Peace of Mind Foundation, a mental health charity.

Gallery Furniture appreciates the students donations of time and talent, and the money they raised.

Hasan and Soria said that the show Wednesday night a great performance and gave credit to their students for taking the time to rehearse for the program even during finals week.

KIPP has an important place in the community -- if you don't know about KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) and the movement that began in Houston, go to their web site at www.kipphouston.org.  KIPP founder Mike Feinberg is a special friend.

By the way, the Class of 2009 at KIPP Houston High School is graduating now and like last year's class each them has been accepted to college.  That's an unmatched record of excellence.

Gallery Furniture is proud to be a supporter of KIPP and honored by the students' show of support.  KIPP's motto is "There are no shortcuts" and that is a guiding principal for Gallery Furniture too.

Robert Horry Stops by Gallery Furniture Post Oak

Robert-horry01 Legendary basketball player Robert Horry - a man with seven NBA championship rings and knows the power of working hard, practicing harder, and having that desire to win - stopped by Gallery Furniture Post Oak to say hi, check out the new store, and of course, to lend his support to the Gallery Furniture family.  His presence was a fun surprise for the staff, and of course, the Gallery Furniture family took pictures with Robert Horry, who was a true gentleman as the staff asked for his pictures.

Robert Horry is a very down to earth man, and he is always welcome at Gallery Furniture as  a member of our own family!  Thanks, Robert, for your show of support.  The Gallery Furniture family always appreciates it when star athletes with the caliber of class like Robert Horry take time to say hi to the Gallery Furniture team.

Logan - A Boy With A Giving Heart

Logan-001  Logan's story is one that the Gallery Furniture family is happy to tell to Houston, because it is a story about the power of giving.  Logan, who attends St. Thomas Moore Catholic school, is a boy who is a true personification of what it means to be selfless, kind, and to put others ahead of yourself.

Logan came into Gallery Furniture concerned about the Gallery Furniture family and how we were affected by the massive fire last Thursday.  Logan showed his concern by wanting to donate the money he had saved up for an iPod Touch to benefit the employees of Gallery Furniture.

This gesture warmed the hearts of all the employees at Gallery Furniture, though we wanted to show Logan that his spirit of giving gave us inspiration.  We donated Logan's money to the Peace of Mind Foundation, an organization committed to helping those living with the effects of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and other such mental illnesses.  Then, in a final show of support of Logan, the Gallery Furniture family bought Logan a 32GB iPod Touch.  And, just to make sure that he has plenty of tunes to rock out to, Gallery Furniture also gave Logan $100 in iTunes gift certificates for him to use on the iTunes and, obviously, the Apple AppStore.

Logan-002 What made Logan's story so unique is that he is a true believer in giving unto others and the spirit of helping his fellow man, a spirit that he shows in all his actions.  When speaking with Logan's family, we learned that young Logan once held a garage sale of his toys to raise money for a friend in his class diagnosed with spina bifida, amongst a host of other charitable and giving campaigns that young Logan would come up with.  His story, the story of compassion, caring, and charity, rang true to the core values of Gallery Furniture, and so our show of gratitude to Logan was to make sure he got his Apple iPod Touch.  To ensure that his story was told, we held a press conference for him at Gallery Furniture Post Oak at 2411 Post Oak Boulevard, with the help of KPRC Channel 2's Ryan Karsgard.

Logan-004 Young men like Logan show what a true humanitarian is - his actions speak volumes, and Gallery Furniture feels that this young man is most certainly destined for great things.

Truly Amazing Deliveries

Who would believe that the day after a major fire destroyed its warehouse, a furniture store would be selling and delivering furniture the same day it was sold?

As hard as it is to believe, that is exactly what the Gallery Furniture team was able to do.  Just hours after the four alarm fire at the warehouse, Gallery Furniture trucks were on the road delivering furniture.

I believe only one store could do it -- Gallery Furniture.  And the dedication of its employees made it possible.

Everyone would understand if Gallery had delivered no furniture on Friday.  Even Mattress Mack was ready to delay Friday's scheduled deliveries.  But Gallery Furniture is all about TODAY, and keeping promises, and the staff said they could do it.  So the day began with a focus on making Friday's deliveries.

Loading And the trucks began to roll.  They were filled with furniture from a number of sources.  Some had been shipped in on trucks that had not yet been unloaded at the warehouse.  Other pieces of furniture were picked up from local distributors and manufacturers, replacing items that were lost in the warehouse.

Making those deliveries was not that simple.

Imagine the difficulties involved.  Someone had to keep track of the furniture that was scheduled for delivery on Friday.  Then furniture to fill the order had to be found, purchased, and picked up.  Delivery trucks had to be loaded and deliveries scheduled.

Lists And all of this was being done without a warehouse!  There was no access to workstations at the main store, so cell phones and computers were put into play.

Yet the Gallery Furniture staff worked through the difficulties and kept the deliveries going out.

Warehouse Then, Friday afternoon a temporary warehouse was found, the lease was done, and the warehouse staff turned out to get it in shape and start unloading trucks of new furniture that were arriving all day.

The sales staff rallied at the Post Oak store and when customers came through the door at eight Friday morning, there were people ready to help.

Rallied is a good word to describe the way all the Gallery Furniture employees responded Friday.  It was a day full of challenges -- challenges accepted, challenges met.

As tough as the last few days have been, it has also been a time of pulling together.  The goal has not changed.  Gallery Furniture is here to delight customers with great furniture at great prices, and deliver it today!

Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau Sends a Letter of Support

HeaderImage

For those who come to visit or move to the fine Bayou City, the first stop for many is www.VisitHoustonTexas.com.  The Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau is often the face forward of Houston for those not familiar with the greatness of Space City.  Today, we received a very warm and friendly letter in which Greg D. Ortale, the President & CEO of the Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau, expressed his best wishes for the Gallery Furniture family.

Visithoustontx

A big thanks to the folks ar rge GHCVB for  their support.

Houston Companies Show Support for Gallery Furniture.

New-york-bagels

Companies large, medium, and small are all showing their support for Gallery Furniture.  The folks over at New York Bagels, Inc. on Hillcroft avenue have been kind enough to send over some food and a letter (shown below) with their support for our hardworking Gallery Furniture crew.

As the folks at New York Bagels, Inc. wished us luck and sent over some "nosh" (that's Yiddish for food to eat).

Children's Messages to Mack

Gallery Furniture has received many cards and notes telling us how sad people were to see or hear about the warehouse fire last week.  Almost all of them encourage the Gallery Furniture family to keep the faith, things will be better.

Messages 4 The most moving -- and sweetest -- messages come from children.  A number of classrooms have sent their messages in the form of hand-made cards.  They are on display at the Post Oak showroom so you can see why they have been such an inspiration to everyone at Gallery.

Here are examples of the messages:

"My class depends on you not to give up.  We really appresheate what you have done.  I know you can get through this problem."

"You are in my prayers and I know you will recover from this."

"Thanks for taking care of Houston!  And let luck smile on you."

"We got your back.  Stay strong and keep doing what you are doing."

"I hope you cheer up and get back to bissness.  I love you."

Messages 3

"After every thunderstorm there's always a rainbow with a pot of gold at the end."

"A couple of years ago I lost my home in a fire.  Now it is brand new.  You will have your storemessages 4 back in no time."

Messages 2

"My family loves your commershull.  Please don't be sad about the fire.  We love you."

Logan's Gift

It is amazing, just amazing, how many people have asked how they can help Gallery Furniture recover from the fire.  They've offered to work for free and lots of people have wanted to make a donation.  The donations are not needed but the thought and spirit behind them is just what the Gallery Furniture family needs, the support and good will of this city of Houston, the city with the biggest heart in the world.

LoganThere's one particular donation that has to be mentioned.  Last weekend a young man came into the store with a plastic bag full of coins and bills.  He said his name was Logan and he'd been saving the money for an iPod.  But after seeing the fire on TV, Logan said he knew we needed the money more, so he brought it to the Post Oak store.  Of course he was told a donation wasn't necessary, but he insisted and in the end no one had to heart to refuse him -- it meant so much to him.

So Logan's donation was accepted.  It will be given to the Peace of Mind Foundation.

This young man's spirit, his passion to help, is an example of the best of our young people and one reason for optimism about the future.  Thank you Logan, not for your gift of money, but for your gift of yourself.

USO and Harris County EMS Cooking Out for Gallery Furniture

Cookout-001

The kind folks of the Harris County EMS Team joined forces with the USO in Sugarland, TX today to cook out for the Gallery Furniture warehouse crew who are working hard at making sure the inbound inventory of furniture like collections from HTD's solid wood mango line, Largo, Opus, and that Sumter Solid Wood furniture all are not just accounted for, but also placed in the racks and then delivered to the customers.

While the Gallery Furniture team is busy working on the inside of the new warehouse, the USO and Harris County EMS cooks are outside getting everything ready for a Texas styled lunch.

Cookout-002

Whether it's burgers, chicken, hotdogs, or corn on the cob, the USO and Harris County EMS are working hard to make sure the Gallery Furniture warehouse team is well fed this Memorial Day weekend.

Prayer before Chow - Led by Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy-leads-prayers

Houston's own KIAH Channel 39 brought some pizza over for the warehouse crew at Gallery Furniture's new warehouse in Sugarland.  Before the crew could chow, though, Gallery Furniture's own Jeremy Hunt led the crew in a solemn prayer giving thanks for the food, and of course for the fact that there was no loss of life at the 6006 location on last Thrusday's fire.

In just a short bit, the Harris county EMS team is bringing over a BBQ pit and having a cookout for the Gallery Furniture warehouse crew at the new Gallery Furniture warehouse in Sugarland.

Below is a video from the prayer.

Gallery Furniture After the Fire

(Hamilton Masters posting for Mack)

It has been a busy three days since the fire that destroyed the Gallery Furniture warehouse and there is no sign it will be letting up any time soon.

That's why this post is being done on behalf of Mack, who is the busiest of all of the staff at Gallery Furniture.

Gf_fire1 As you know, the fire Thursday night gutted the warehouse behind the main store at 6006 I-45 North.

There was concern that night that the fire would spread to the store and destroy it as well.  Thanks to the work of the Houston Fire Department and its brave firefighters, the store survived.  There is smoke and water damage of course, and it will be a while before it can be re-opened, but it will be back and better than ever.

Earlier this year Gallery Furniture opened a new store on Post Oak Boulevard.  That is the main showroom for the near future.

Friday's main effort was finding temporary warehouse space.  By three p.m., Gallery Furniture had a warehouse rented and within minutes crews began unloading trucks that had arrived with new furniture.  Overnight, the warehouse was organized and by Saturday morning deliveries were being made from there.

Gallery Furniture was getting phone calls and emails of support even before the fire was out overnight Thursday.  Friday morning a Messages to Mack board was set up on the www.GalleryFurniture.com web site and it was immediately overwhelmed with messages.  You can read them at the Message Board.

Saturday and Sunday were busy days as the Gallery Furniture staff continued to set up the new warehouse, unload furniture, and load our trucks for deliveries.  And seeing lots of customers!

Some of you said you were coming in to show your support of Mack and Gallery Furniture, moving up a planned purchase or deciding to buy furniture instead of something else.  Hearing such comments from customers warms our hearts.  Mack has shared some of the conversations he's had with customers and there's no doubt he has been moved.

Especially by the young man who came in with money he has been saving to buy an iPod and told Mack "you need it more than I do."

There have been a number of such offers, and people who have sent food, called and asked if they can push a broom at the warehouse or answer the phone, or do anything to help.

You cannot know how much all of your expressions of love and support, and your prayers, mean to Mack, the McIngvale family, and all of the employees.

Thank you, Houston.

The Women of Gallery Furniture Bringing it All Together

Tiffany-rhonda-working

Rhonda and Tiffany are better known to our Gallery Furniture customers as cashiers.  They have written up many orders and finalized them for customers as well as getting the orders processed to delivery.  Well, like all things at Gallery Furniture, you end up working more than one job, and after the Thursday fire Rhonda and Tiffany came into the new Gallery Furniture warehouse in Sugarland, TX and now are working on inventory for our Gallery Furniture customers.

Cashier Rhonda summarized the job: "It's checking the numbers, making sure the count is right.  Tiffany and I are getting the ordering team's back, and someone will catch our backs, to make sure the count is right."

When asked her assesment of the new digs for Gallery Furniture's warehouse, Tiffany responded by what every Texan who ever worked a warehouse along the Gulf Coast knows: "It's HOT.  But you know, we'll make it through and things will be fine."

Yes it will.  Gallery Furniture never stops serving our customers - from sales floor to warehouse to delivery to pick-up, Gallery Furniture is here for you TODAY.

Job Fair at Gallery Furniture

JF4 Even though there's a recession out there, some companies are hiring.  That includes Gallery Furniture!

Gallery Furniture isn't ignoring the recession, but just isn't participating.  Business continues to be good and there's a need for new employees.

That's why several hundred people came to the North Freeway store Thursday for the first Job Fair of 2009 at Gallery Furniture.

Applications were being taken for Sales Associates, Warehouse staff, Internet Sales and Marketing staff, and sales trainers.

Job seekers were given details about the jobs available when they first arrived and then filled out applications.

JF2 Then it was time for the first set of interviews with the folks who will be supervising the new hires.

No hiring decisions were made today.  After the applications are reviewed, the second stage of the process will begin with a number of job seekers called back for a second interview.

After that, Gallery Furniture will have several dozen new employees and will be able to delight even more customers with great furniture, great prices, great service, and do it all TODAY!

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson at Gallery Furniture Post Oak

DSCF4198 Gallery Furniture was honored to have Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson, R-Texas at the Gallery Furniture Post Oak location for a press conference on the issue of taxation - specifically, the over taxation by the federal government on the hard working men and women (as well as small to medium sized businesses) that is present in America today.  Add to that, her support to remove all marriage penalty taxes and also to show support for government that does not spend, tax & borrow, and her speech was a rousing success today.  Senator Hutchinson is the first and only woman Senator ever elected by the citizens of Texas, and her passion of service for the great state of Texas is matched by her knowledge of the issues and her service in Washington on some of the Senate's most prominent committees.

DSCF4204A Gallery Furniture was also proud to have folks like the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce, The Galleria Area Chamber of Commerce, The Asian Chamber of Commerce, the South Asian Chamber of Commerce, distinguished representatives from the local area and media today to hear Senator Hutchinson speak on issues such as the fact that many in Washington make it hard for people wanting to live the American Dream (especially the young people).

DSCF4178A Senator Hutchinson made note that today is a special day in this great country, one that she noted that Republicans dread - that old day of April 15th (tax day).  Sen. Hutchinson made it very clear, and Gallery Furniture agrees, that everything beyond what government must do (such as commerce, defense) should be left in the pocketbooks of those who earned it.  Not earmarked for special interests or used to borrow one's way out of a jam.  Turns out that Sen. Hutchinson opposed the current federal budget with its 1.4 trillion dollars in tax increase, and she felt that the government of the United States would borrow too much, spend too much, and tax entirely too much in an attempt to go against the wiser ideals of letting the private sector do its job and keep money in the hands of its earners.

Senator Hutchinson made note that as a society we should go against taxation and that we need more tax cuts in a recession, which was what presidents such as Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush did in their terms in office.  To this end, Sen. Hutchinson is a big supporter of the Tea Parties being held around the country today in protestation of taxation, and that this grass roots movement is a great thing.  Gallery Furniture's own Matress Mack will be speaking at one such Tea Party in The Woodlands today.

DSCF4209 Gallery Furniture also shares the view of Senator Hutchinson that one of the great advantages of the State of Texas is our lack of a personal income tax - something that gives our great state an advantage over the 42 states that do currently have a state personal income tax.

28 Years. 2 Locations. 1 Belief: If you buy it TODAY, you get it TODAY!

TRAN Daniel C. of Houston stopped in at Gallery Furniture today and while working with Gallery Furniture salesperson Jimmy Tran, had some choice words about another furniture store - namely Rooms-To-Go.  Turns out, his promised next day delivery was a bit longer than "next day."  According to Daniel and his life partner, it was a nightmarish experience that stretched upwards of three weeks.  And Rooms-To-Go never got the order right with three weeks to work on it.

"I went to Rooms-To-Go to grab a bedroom set.  Very simple bedroom group, a nice sleigh bed that we saw, and we paid by credit card and left, and figured everything would just fall into place.  We paid about $110 for delivery and nothing went right - at all."

Turns out that the first let-down by Rooms-To-Go was the delivery.  "They told us it would take about two weeks," Daniel continued "well, two weeks went by, and when the delivery driver showed up at my door there was a sleigh footboard, all right, but a panel headboard.  Same manufacturer, I think, but this was not the bed I ordered."

Daniel then did as the Rooms-To-Go delivery driver told him: "Call customer service!" So, naturally, Daniel wanted some resolution to the whole thing after waiting two weeks.  "I couldn't believe this was happening, so I called the Rooms-To-Go Customer Service and customer service I never got.  When I told the lady on the phone what happened, she told me to use the panel headboard that I had, it would work fine.  When I explained to the woman that the rails don't match up and won't hook to the panel anyway and now I will be sleeping on the floor she pointedly said 'Well, that's not MY problem.' And then she hung up on me."

Shocked and angered by the rude Rooms-To-Go customer service line, Daniel and his partner drove up last Saturday to the Rooms-To-Go store and spoke with their salesperson and then the sales manager.  "Honestly, I was not angry at the saleslady or the manager, I was just so upset by the whole lack of caring.  So, I told the manager what was happening and he asked me if I called Rooms-To-Go Customer Service line and I said to him 'I called what you said was customer service, but that is not at all what I got!'"

Daniel then did what anyone would do and what all Houstonians deserve, he wanted immediate delivery of his furniture.  The manager told Daniel the best that Rooms-To-Go could do was have the new headboard by Wednesday.  At this point, Daniel brought up the commercial that was playing on local Houston television stations that said "Rooms-To-Go has next day delivery!" - the response the store manager gave Daniel left him floored.

"The manager at the Rooms-To-Go told me that their next day delivery has 'Provisions'!  Provisions?  Why?  It says 'next day delivery' and they should stick with it.  But no, the provisions are stuff like 'you must order by 2 p.m.' and 'it must be in stock' and 'there cannot be any inventory changes' and all these things I can't control anyway.  So what's the point of Rooms-To-Go even telling me they can have it the next day when they can't?  Honestly?"

Deciding to resolve the issue without more hassle, Daniel made Rooms-To-Go a very simple and direct offer: "I told them, if they don't have that headboard by Wednesday they can come and get their crap outta my house.  Well, I didn't say crap, but you know.  So, when Wednesday came, they said they would be there by about 10:00 a.m. - well, it took Rooms-To-Go delivery til 4:15 to get there, and the sleigh headboard was cracked and split right down the middle."

This was the last straw for Daniel.  "Unacceptable.  So I decided to do some research.  Did you know that in the short time Rooms-To-Go has been in business they have already accumulated over 240 formal complaints with the State of Texas and the Better Business Bureau?  You know the driver said something that really blew my mind when they delivered  the broken headboard, the Rooms-To-Go driver said that his truck had 47 stops to make that day.  Of the 47 Rooms-To-Go stops, only ONE of them had a complete delivery.  ONE of them.  He told me that the other 46 stops were things like no parts, incomplete sets, wrong pull by the Rooms-To-Go warehouse, wrong colors sent out, you name it.  I felt bad for the driver because he was just a contractor and could only get paid on completed stops, so all his work that and he only got paid for one stop because of Rooms-To-Go."

In the end Daniel had his credit card company reverse the charge.  "I told Rooms-To-Go to come pick their junk up.  It's still in my house.  It's all still in boxes - Rooms-To-Go does not offer to assemble furniture.  When they tried to make a schedule to come pick it up I told them absolutely not - that this time, they would work on my schedule.  I decided to come to Gallery Furniture."

So what did Daniel pick out at Gallery Furniture?  "A sleigh bed.  What I wanted from the start."  (Daniel pointed at one of the solid wood Sumter bedroom groups).  And with same-day delivery, drivers employed and working for Gallery Furniture, and in-stock merchandise Daniel will get that sleigh bed today.  With Gallery Furniture's great customer service, you don't have to sleep on a backorder slip because backorders don't live here at Gallery Furniture.  So, Daniel will get what he wants on time, in his house, and fully assembled.

Look For The Bears!

Bear1 There's an invasion underway at Gallery Furniture.  Four large black bears have staked their claim to the area around the big tree in the children's area.  The bears are friendly, just big teddy bears really.  Giant teddy bears that are ready to greet all visitors with a smile.

They're not the first bears in that part of Gallery Furniture.  A number of teddy bears hvae been on display in the children's section, but these are the biggest by far.  (They are almost as large as the bear that greets customers at the front of the store.)

Since the bears arrived, they've been a hit with young and old, and the bears are always ready to pose for a picture.

Bear3

Bear4 Of course, the bears aren't the only attraction in the Gallery Furniture children's area.  You'll find beds and bedroom furniture of all types, from bunk beds, to space saving lofts and bunks, to full sized beds, chest, dressers, and desks.

Gallery Furniture has everything you need to outfit your child's room in style they'll love.  You don't have to tell them it's practical.  You can tell them that their new furniture can be delivered TODAY!

So come on by and say hello to the bears, take a picture, and check out a great selection of furniture for youngsters.  It's all in one place, Gallery Furniture at 6006 I-45 North, between Tidwell and Parker!

Back Order Horror Story

You've heard me say it for years -- there are no back order slips at Gallery Furniture.  You don't have to wait days or weeks for your new furniture.  There's a great illustration in the story Holly K. tells us.

Monday, she got a circular in the mail from Landmark Furniture advertising a bunk bed set.  She needed bunk beds and the price looked good, so she went to the store to look at them.  The salesman told her that the beds were in stock and she could get them in a hurry.  But that story changed when he started writing up the order.  Holly was told there were missing items but she would have everything this week, "definitely by Friday."

Tuesday and Wednesday went by with no sign of the beds.  So on Thursday she called the store to ask if they bunk beds would be delivered Friday.  Then she was told the she could not get them before sometime next week.  No one knew exactly when next week.

Holly says she wanted the bunk beds "now, not next week."  So she asked for her money back.  The store refused to give her the money, but offered to deliver the bunk beds on the floor and not charge her for the delivery.  Holly told them she didn't want the floor models and was told that she'd get the bunk beds when the store had them.

There were several more conversations until Holly told them that "after this horrible experience, I don't want your furniture."  She said she'd dispute the credit card transaction.

She did just that, and  the credit card company is waiting for a response from Landmark.  She expects to get  her money back.  Her husband isn't happy about the situation either, and has been online telling the story on several web sites.

Holly Friday, Holly came to Gallery Furniture, where she found the bunk beds she wanted.  "I'm not going to disappoint my kids, they'll have the new bunk beds today."

"It took me ten minutes in Gallery Furniture this morning and this afternoon I'll have what I paid for."

Holly's story is the kind of story Gallery Furniture hears every day. People tell me they've been waiting for days, weeks, even months, for the furniture they bought at another store.

Folks, you don't have to wait.  If you're sitting on a back order slip from another furniture store, get your money back and come to Gallery Furniture.  When you find what  you want, one of Gallery Furniture's professional delivery teams will be ready to deliver your new furniture today!

A Welcome Visitor at Gallery Furniture

You've read about Sergeant Aaron Simmons in this blog before.  He's the soldier who wrote Gallery Furniture last year asking about getting a TV for the 2008 Super Bowl. (see archive) Gallery was glad to help, and with the help of the USO's Susie Barlow, the sergeant and his troops got to see the Super Bowl on a big screen TV.

Though he's from Texas, Sgt. Simmons is stationed in Colorado now.  He along with his lovely wife Fawn and young son Eric, stopped by Gallery Furniture Friday to say thank you.

Simmons1 About that television...

“Honestly, I never thought the letter would make it here, I didn’t,” Sgt. Simmons said, “Mostly because, I will level with you, mail really gets lost out there en route here.  Sometimes it feels like a crapshoot, and the guys in my platoon were shocked that we got the TV to begin with, even more shocked when I told them how we got it.  Seriously, I never thought the letter requesting one (a TV) for our platoon would make it to you guys, much less that we would actually get the TV, and we are so thankful for the response from Gallery Furniture.  You guys are the greatest.”

Shipping the TV to Iraq got news coverage in Houston, something Fawn Simmons appreciated.

“It’s a nice story to hear, that my husband and his platoon got to watch the Super Bowl with the Gallery Furniture television.  It’s a lot better to hear the positive stories about what happens in military life than constantly hearing all the negativity.  It meant a lot to my husband and the men he serves with.  I thought it was a very nice gesture by Gallery Furniture.”

Sgt. Simmons then relayed a harrowing tale about his unit’s supply trucks taking mortar fire.  “It was something else – and the most interesting thing is that out platoon lost the other supplies like tents and stuff, but the TV you guys sent survived.  It scared me at first, I think everyone in my platoon was worried the TV broke more than anything else.  We found the TV, it was turned on its side and at an angle and I was like ‘Please, please, please, don’t be broken!’ and when we had a chance, plugged it in and it worked just fine.”

The conversation then turned to where the Gallery Furniture TV is now, and Sgt. Simmons was quick to point out “Hopefully it is on its way home!  Kinda like the mail, things take a long time to get back here – first to Kuwait, then by boat, through a station in Texas, up to Colorado, basically it will take a while and I've got my fingers crossed!”

Simmons2 While they were at Gallery Furniture, Sgt. Simmons was interviewed by Fox 26's Ned Hibbert for a story about soldiers returning from Iraq.

It was nice to see Aaron Simmons and his wonderful family.  It was good to see that he is recovering from a non-combat injury that put him in the hospital for several weeks.  It meant a lot to be able to help the troops see the Super Bowl, and to get to know a fine young man even if it was by email and long distance phone calls.

Next time you see a man or woman in uniform, make sure to shake their hand and say thanks for being in the armed forces.  And if you want to give back to the troops, give the way Gallery Furniture does – give to the USO at http://www.uso.org

Designer Bill Stubbs is now working with Gallery Furniture on the new Post Oak store and other projects.  That's why an email from Glenda, who works at his Moment of Luxury company, was so pleasing.

Glenda was one of the first customers at the new Gallery Furniture store, buying a new Classic Tempur-Pedic sleep system.

ClassicclipshadowShe writes:

Dear Mack,

The Tempur-Pedic mattress I purchased the evening of the Gallery Furniture Post Oak press party was delivered right on time.  The delivery men were exceptional.

I jumped right on it when the guys set it down and I felt like I have been dumped from a platform 18 inches high onto the sidewalk.  The guys chuckled and said I needed to wait until the mattress had a chance to warm to room temperature.  It was extremely cold the day it was delivered.

I love this mattress!  I am conscious of the entire length of my body in contact with and being supported by incredible comfort.  I have actually concentrated on the sensation of contact on the entire length of my foot, including toes.

Usually you are aware of just heavier or more protruding parts touching, but this mattress allows contact and support without interruption.

I bought this mattress desperate for improvement over another quite expensive mattress which was only a few years old.  I bought the Tempur-Pedic on FAITH in your word in advertising.  I must hand it to you -- you are telling the truth about the Tempur-Pedic mattress!

Thanks Glenda!

There's only one Tempur-Pedic sleep system.  You'll get a great night's sleep with a new Tempur-Pedic.

There are three ways to buy a new Tempur-Pedic from Gallery Furniture.  Visit the original Gallery Furniture store at 6006 I-45 North between Tidwell and Parker, or the new Post Oak Gallery Furniture store at 2411 Post Oak Boulevard, or dial the Tempur-Pedic hotline at 713.694.5570.  Either way, you'll be sleeping on your new Tempur-Pedic tonight because Gallery Furniture delivers Today!

A Visit from the President

A Great Night's Sleep becomes a Family Tradition

ClassicBedWeb

Mr. Mitchell of Manvel, Texas was so excited about his Gallery Furniture order today that he called Gallery Furniture and thanked Mack himself! Turns out that he bought his granddaughter a twin Tempur-Pedic mattress for her bookcase bed with drawers because he, and his wife Betty, already bought one themselves and knew the value of a great night's sleep.  They figured the best way to pass along the value of the great night's sleep was to give their granddaughter that same exact experience.

"We've known Mack for a long time, and I've lived in Houston for 31 years, so I remember the old store, and watched him grow.  I bought my wife and I's last Tempur-Pedic at Gallery Furniture, as well some recliners, so we came in for this Tempur-Pedic for our grandaughter.  There was no choice, really - we only wanted to go to Gallery Furniture."

When asked what meant the most for him on today's shopping experience, Mr. Mitchell said: "It was the speed!  We live in Manvel, that's a good 45 minutes to one hour away from the store.  I'd say we shopped in there about noon.  I barely had time to break the old bed down, get the mattress out, and then I get the call."

That call Mr. Mitchell got came from Gallery Furniture Delivery Team member Jose to tell Mr. Mitchell that they were about 30-45 minutes out from their home with their new Tempur-Pedic.

"The driver, New York, and his team partner Jose, were very nice, polite, and they had everything set up quick.  It was more than fast.  It was ultra-fast.  They were here by about 2:30 and gone by 3:15 p.m.  They even helped me move the old mattress to a spot outside where I was having someone pick it up so they could get it to a needy family, and that was mighty nice of them.  You know, after all this time shopping there, I feel like I know Mack.  I know him as a person, and I appreciate the way he runs his business and how he helps the community.  He has the best service, the best delivery, the best period.  That's why I keep coming back, because Gallery Furniture is the best."

And a big thanks back out to Mr. Mitchell - who proves that when you buy it TODAY, you get it TODAY, only from Gallery Furniture.  From the Gallery Furniture Tempur-Pedic sleep system to recliners to dining rooms - Gallery Furniture will have that furniture in your home fast.

Or, as Mr. Mitchell says:  ultra-fast.

Delivery: Above and Beyond

Gallery Furniture delivery teams are used to getting big pieces of furniture through doorways, even at the end of hallways.  But Janie and Robert had a challenge for the Gallery Furniture team, a challenge they met by going above and beyond the normal delivery service.Dovt0

Janie and Robert bought a new Signature bedroom from Gallery Furniture, a bedroom that includes a dresser and mirror combination that hides a television behind the mirror.  An electric motor lowers the mirror when it's time to watch TV.

Here's the challenge -- the doorway to the bedroom is only 37 inches wide and the dresser is 42 inches wide, with the motor housing adding another couple of inches to the back.

To make it more difficult, the door is at the end of a hall, requiring a 90 degree turn to get into the bedroom.

At this point the folks who deliver furniture for almost any store would have looked at the situation and said, "No way!"  They'd have would have given up and told the customer to find something smaller.

Not the Gallery Furniture team.  Like Hannibal at the Alps, they were determined to make a way.  If the door could not be made to fit the dresser, they dresser would be made to fit the doorway.  To do that, they dresser had to be disassembled.

Dovt1 Dovt2 Dovt3

It took John, Raymond, Henry, and Tranh almost four hours to remove the mirror, the top, and one end.

Then came the job of moving the parts into the bedroom.  The body of the dresser had to be lifted and placed on one end, then moved carefully through the hallway and the bedroom door.  Once inside, the job wasn't finished.

The dresser had to be reassembled.  That took another two hours, but when they were done it looked like it on the showroom floor.  The mirror lift worked, and Robert and Janie were happy.

The Gallery Delivery teams will go the extra mile to make a customer happy, but this time the team went above and beyond what anyone could expect.  What other Houston furniture store would take almost seven hours to deliver a piece of furniture?

At Gallery Furniture it's all about delighting great Houston customers -- like you -- with the world's best products and service.  Come experience the Gallery Furniture difference TODAY!

Service is a Tradition at Gallery Furniture

The headline for this post is a direct quote from an email that came in this week from a customer.  Mark S. wrote to tell us about his experience at Gallery Furniture and his email is worth sharing.

Dear Mack,

I am writing to commend three of your employees.  We bought a leather sectional, chair, and dining table/chairs on Saturday, 1/17.  Our sales associate was Eugene and he was great.  He won over my wife (a tough task) and was wonderful throughout the entire process.

Our furniture was delivered on Monday as we requested.  Your delivery guys, Mike and Eddie, were efficient, polite and more helpful than we could have imagined.  We asked if they could move our old sofa into an upstairs bedroom.  Not only did they do this, but they worked their tails off making it fit through the narrow door and hallway.  They could have easily said it won't fit and I would have agreed.  They instead found a way to make it work and did so without a whimper.  Our furniture looks great and we will definitely be back.

I have been with HPD for 17  years and worked the 45 North area when Gallery was just basically a big tent.  I recall fighting a suspect on the shoulder of 45 one day and when we finally had him in custody none other than Mattress Mack walked out to offer all of the officers sandwiches and drinks.  It is easy to see that service is a tradition at Gallery and as a life long Houstonian I thank you and your wonderful staff.

Thanks Mark, for your kind words and your years of service to our community.  Gallery Furniture is dedicated to delighting our customers and it is nice to know when we succeed.

What’s the hype with Microfiber?

115124846Microfiber is new age technology that has been labeled as the fabric of the future. Microfiber is fiber with very thin strands, (less than one denier).

It can be made to look like suede or leather, and makes very attractive furniture. For example, many manufacturers make excellent microfiber sofas. Fabrics made with microfibers are very soft, repels water, and can be cleaned though washing allowing you to maintain beautiful and clean furniture after accidents or spills.

Gallery Furniture sells a variety of microfiber furniture in order to provide you with furniture that is durable, water repellent, and will fit well in a single person home, or where there is a big family with children.

The microfiber furniture is a great choice for price conscious shoppers and those who want furniture to resist stains and dirt. A lovely choice is the Ashley Eli Galaxy sofa. The stylish contemporary design and plush pillow top makes the sofa fashionable and comforting.

The seating cushions are surrounded by thick padded arms and supportive back cushions. The artistically curved design with the clean look of the durable upholstery fabric comes together to create a beautiful contemporary style that will fit flawlessly into any living room decor.

Red Bull Visits Gallery Furniture

IMG_1491

The holiday season is passing, but the spirit of giving is not. Today Gallery Furniture’s employees were visited by the Red Bull street team Francis

and Diane.  The two Red Bull representatives work to spread awareness and promote the uses of Red Bull.

They were excited to let Gallery Furniture employees try the drink.   Red Bull is for those individuals who have busy schedules or want to be wide awake and active.  Francis and Diane insist, though that the benefits of

drinking Red Bull are obvious once you drink it.  " I had one this morning because I had a late night yesterday," said one of the reps.

The street team also passed out booklets that included information on how Red Bull increases performance, concentration and improves reaction speed, endurance, and stimulates the metabolism.
